Meet Our Shepherds

Doug Guthrie
My ministry interests are working with and encouraging people as we walk the Christian life together and my personal philosophy of ministry is to develop a close relationship with people and let them know I care to be involved in their lives. A verse that guides me is Philippians 4:13 - “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” My commitment to the Argyle body is that I will do my best to follow the Holy Spirit’s leading and encourage you as a body to do the same.

I believe that the simplicity of the gospel message to believers is found in the words of Jesus in Matthew as he commands us: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” And the second is like it; “Love your neighbor as yourself. ” Then, related to the second, Jesus is recorded by John as he raises the bar to this higher standard; “Love each other as I have loved you.” This should be the goal of every disciple as we strive for unity and peace, rejoicing in our freedom in Christ Jesus, and in our adoption as children of the King.

My commitment to the Argyle body is to be authentic and transparent. I will be available to pray, encourage, and support you in your walk of faith. I desire your prayers and support as we grow in our love for Christ and each other. My vision for the Argyle body is that we will continue to glorify God and grow numerically through our Small Groups as we reach out to be a blessing to our surrounding community, neighbors, co-workers, and people that God puts in our path everyday.

I would rather know the heart of a brother or sister than their history. In Ezekiel, God promises the house of Israel “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.” While striving for perfection is only possible through the blood of Christ, I seek a spirit like Hezekiah who prayed for those whose “heart was set on God” even when they had fallen short of His decrees.

Jesus loves us. He died for us so that we can have a relationship with His Father. A shepherd is a servant of Jesus who walks with us as we grow in that relationship. Paul said, “This is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.” Phil. 1:9-11
